Description
In the 1070’s, scientists James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis developed the Gaia Theory.
This theory, named after the primordial Earth goddess of Greek Mythology, proposed that living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a complex, self-regulating system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet.
In the decades since scientists have gathered more and more evidence that this general notion is true.
Wild plants and animals - simply going about their business within their ecosystems - are what create and maintain the breathable atmosphere, stable global temperature and cycles of nutrients that make life on Earth possible.
These wild natural systems, co-evolving over millions of years, built our living world before humans ever arrived on the scene.
These wild places are vital for our survival.
Their protection and nurturing is necessary for our survival.
You could say that these places, these communities of living beings - are sacred.
This piece explores the concept of the Living World as a complex, inter-connected system that creates and sustains abundance for All Life on Earth.
I portray this concept as a goddess figure, following the traditions of sacred and mystical art. Encoded within the imagery are numerous details that symbolize the various elements of the global ecology and planetary cycles.
Many of the classifications of Lifeforms are represented - mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, crustaceans, cephalopods, mollusks, annelids, isopods, trees, vines, grasses, moss, flowering plants, fruiting plants, ferns and fungi.
Also included are symbols for the the energetic influence of the Sun, the gravitational influence of the Moon, weather and electrical phenomenon, the Earth’s magnetic field that shields the planet from cosmic radiation, the oceans, rock, soil and fresh water.
This magnificently diverse combination of elements, interacting on a collective, global scale, is the very foundation of Life as we know it.
